I've been tie dyeing for over 25 years during which time I've done it as a hobby, a career and most importantly as a lifestyle. If you are interested in getting into tie dyeing I recommend getting started in a place where you can't make too much of a mess until you get the hang of it, especially if you're starting this journey with children! Something as simple as setting up a table in the backyard near your garden shed so if worse comes to worse and you end up spilling you aren't ruining your carpet or staining the walls. All in all, tie dyeing is a fantastic hobby and is well worth the trial and error of getting started.
